IT in Sandy Springs

Why IT in Sandy Springs looks different from the suburbs around it

Sandy Springs became a city in 2005, and the 2020 census counted 108,080 residents. That makes it one of the largest cities in Georgia, but the population figure undersells it. On a weekday, the office towers at Perimeter Center and the hospitals on Pill Hill pull in workers from across metro Atlanta. Big employers such as UPS and Mercedes-Benz USA have their headquarters here, along with a long list of regional offices.

Those big names run their own IT departments. The firms that need outside help are the ones around them. The Census Bureau's ZIP Code Business Patterns for 2023 count 3,717 employer establishments in the 30328 and 30350 ZIP codes, which cover most of the city. Of those, 926 employ between 10 and 249 people. That's a business with enough staff and data to need real IT, but rarely enough to justify a full IT department.

Leased suites in shared towers

Many of those firms rent space in multi-tenant buildings along Perimeter Center Parkway, Glenlake Parkway, Peachtree Dunwoody Road and Abernathy Road. Leased space shapes IT in ways people don't expect. The landlord controls the telecom room and the riser cabling. Some buildings offer shared internet or Wi-Fi to tenants. Your network closet may be a converted storage room with no cooling. And when the lease ends, you may move the whole office to a tower across the street. We design networks for that reality: your own firewall in front of anything the building provides, labeled cabling and documentation that makes the next move a project, not a crisis.

The medical center

Pill Hill, the cluster around Johnson Ferry Road and Peachtree Dunwoody Road, is home to Northside Hospital Atlanta, Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. The medical office buildings around them are full of physician groups, surgery centers, imaging, therapy and billing firms. Even without the ZIP code those hospitals sit in, the 2023 counts show 395 medical, dental and outpatient establishments in 30328 and 30350. These practices connect to hospital portals and e-prescribing services, store patient records covered by HIPAA and can't afford a down day at the front desk.

Money, law and advice

The same counts show 256 banking, lending, investment and wealth firms, 193 law firms, 141 insurance agencies and carriers and 88 accounting firms. They hold client data that regulators, insurers and clients all ask about. They also move money on instructions sent by email, which makes them a favorite target for business email compromise. For these firms, security and record keeping matter as much as fast support.

A city with train stations

Sandy Springs has three MARTA Red Line stations, at Medical Center, Sandy Springs and North Springs, with Dunwoody station just across the line at Perimeter Mall. Few suburbs can say that, and it changes how people work. Staff answer email on the train, work from home in Brookhaven or Roswell two days a week and drop into the office for meetings. Their laptops have to be managed and protected wherever they open them, and Microsoft 365 has to be set up to tell a normal sign-in from a stolen password.

Beyond the towers

Not every firm sits in a high-rise. Along the Roswell Road corridor and near City Springs, plenty of businesses work out of older low-rise offices and retail centers with a single cable connection and a closet full of aging gear. Their problems are more basic, and fixing them is often faster.

The usual trouble

Problems we see in Sandy Springs offices

Most firms here don't lack technology. They lack someone who owns it from end to end.

The building network isn't yours

Your suite plugs into a riser and a telecom room you don't control. Some towers provide internet or Wi-Fi as an amenity. That's convenient, but your data then shares a path with every other tenant on the floor.

Your last move left loose ends

You changed towers or floors, and the cabling, firewall rules and conference room gear were rushed to meet the move date. Two years later, nobody knows which cable goes where.

Wire fraud is aimed at your deals

Closings, settlements, distributions and vendor payments all move money by email instruction. One spoofed message can redirect a payment, and the bank may not get it back.

Hybrid work happened without a plan

Some staff ride MARTA in, some drive in on GA-400 two days a week and some never come in. Their laptops, home networks and logins were set up one at a time, in a hurry.
